The
treatment is performed entirely by hand. It is relatively gentle
but effective.
As a "conventionally" trained medical practitioner I continue
to be surprised by the results one can achieve. Rapid, accurate
thrusts are applied to bony points and not only encourage the bones
to resume a more normal position relative to their neighbours, but
also cause a reflex contraction and relaxation of local muscle groups.
The intention is to break the vicious cycle of pain muscle
spasm jammed facet joints more pain and allow the
horse's own powerful natural healing to resume. |

And afterwards..
I will recommend
a routine for you and your horse that will encourage healing,
and might include some other exercises for you to use.
Your horse should be back in normal work after about a week. Generally
speaking I find that three or four treatments will sort out a
lot of problems. It is sensible to give your horse an "MOT"
every four to six months.
Prevention is better than cure!
To sum
up..
- If you
feel there is a problem, you're probably right.
- A lot of
what ends up in the back starts somewhere else.
- No single
practitioner is going to sort all your problems. A joint approach
between vet, farrier, back man, saddler and others is frequently
the best way.

If
your horse feels good he'll look good too!
My grateful
thanks to Dieter Krohnert, German Olympic farrier, for teaching
me such a lot about feet, and allowing me to use some of his photographs.
